It’s been a very busy few weeks. With a national conference, a podcast, six full days of teaching a week, as well as a few other interesting projects (stay tuned for news on that) I am taking the opportunity this week to reflect on some fundamentals. Keeping music at the center of our classroom culture is a big priority for us here at MusicXT. Not only is music the subject of our class, it is often the solution to issues around classroom management or student engagement. Make sure you read this previous post and watch the video to get up to speed on music driven classroom management.

It doesn’t seem to matter where I’m giving a workshop or what the topic is, one of the first questions I consistently hear has to do with classroom management. Perhaps it is because a MusicXT classroom does not have some of the guardrails that traditional classrooms might lean on, such as desks, chairs, tables, or other physical boundaries. The conventional wisdom is that this invites chaos, that the lack of limitations on student movement is a tacit endorsement of anarchy. One can imagine that children will take advantage of the space to cause all sorts of trouble.
