I’ve been reflecting on how to effectively to teach tonal concepts through physical sensation. There are many ways I’ve seen it done, and with great success. There is definitely a correlation between “high/low” pitches and “high/low” gestures… but I’m not exactly sure that this captures the FEELING of the pitch. Those kind of exercises seem to associate the pitch of the note, and it’s position on the staff, with the level of height of a movement. These are fun activities and help students to listen carefully but they stop short of CAPTURING the sensation of pitch in a physical sense.
