This summer at Interlochen has been very interesting so far! I’ve been pushing my intermediate students (these are young musicians from 12-15 years old) and have asked them to do some fairly difficult tasks! While most of the subscribers of MusicXT are interested in elementary, I think it’s valuable to share some of these more advanced lesson ideas, perhaps to see where the work CAN go, and also to see how my own work is evolving! This is part of a much longer lesson arc in which we’re working on the difference between simple and compound meters. Once we can really tell the difference, then we start to combine simple and compound beats into irregular meters. There are so many lessons you could use to practice this along the way. One of my famous ones is the “Pizza vs PizzaHut” sequence which I’ve presented at several conferences.

You might also begin to try to combine the simple and compound beats through the 5/8 meter first! This one is nice because it is the most simple example of irregular meter:

Eventually you can put together different combinations of simple and compound beats. Try to focus on the various beat levels… how would we step the strong beats, how would we conduct? How would we clap the microbeats? Can we improvise rhythms using a rhythm-menu?
